Opinion: Why funding medical research is important for Ohio

Medical researchers are achieving new milestones that once seemed distant and unattainable, and the pace of medical discovery has increased exponentially since the mapping of the human genome.
The challenge is to continue this progress for the benefit of patients coping with diseases from cancer to diabetes.
As we look ahead to a new president, Congress and a new Ohio governor in the not-too-distant future, we must make certain federal and state policy makers understand the importance of funding medical science.
Voters strongly support this goal. A recent poll for the Galen Institute and Center Forward, and involving voters from 12 battleground states, including Ohio, confirms voters all but unanimously support medical discovery as a means to enhance treatments and cures. Ninety-five percent told pollsters they believe medical innovation is key to improving America’s health care system.
